The Ranch Polokwane

IMG_4422löwenmeWhile we are in the area, it is always a winner to take your guests to the Protea Hotel Ranch Resort  in Polokwane. It is by far not the real “wild” Africa, but if you, like me, have guests and little time to organize a full blown camping Safari out in the bush this is a great one-stop alternative to wow your friends. And who wouldn’t want their picture taken with a lion? Sometimes they even have some tigers they are taking care of, it is a good idea to call beforehand to find out about the times for game drives and specials.

The Ranch Conservancy is situated on a private game reserve 25km’s south of Polokwane on the N1 and R101 highway respectively and a 280km drive North of Johannesburg on the N1 Highway. Comprising of 1000 hectares of pristine Limpopo Province bushveld, The Ranch Conservancy is unique due to the diverse features in which it offers.

The Ranch Conservancy’s unique features include: Protea Hotel Ranch Resort, the lion and hyena park, 25 species of antelope including the rare and endangered sable antelope, over 200 species of birds, the Kolobe bush camp which includes team building facilities and accommodation ideal for groups up to 70 pax that are searching for a venue in a true African bush environment.

We have been there on numberous occasions, mostly to entertain overseas visitors who were always excited about the “lion sightings guaranteed” game drives! Okay, it’s a far shot from the real bush hunting experience but you can sure take some real nice pictures if that’s what you are after.

The Ranch Protea Hotel itself is lovely, with it’s beautiful English rose garden sporting a vast selection of stunning roses.

The most talked about activity at Protea Hotel Ranch Resort is no doubt the ‘Walk With Lions’ experience. Guests have the opportunity to löwen 034encounter free roaming, African lions in their natural habitat for up to an hour and a half, an experience that is both unique and memorable.

Protea Hotel Ranch Resort is now home to rare and endangered white lions, Mohlatsi the male white lion share his experiences with his friends and followers on facebook (Mohlatsi Lucky-One) and twitter (@Mohlatsi).

The hotel, offers 150 deluxe rooms and self-catering accommodation featuring all modern conveniences, whilst our Presidential and Executive suites feature their own court-yard and spa pool. Our superior culinary team offers unequalled quality, creativity and proficiency to local and international cuisines. Wine and dine in either Basil’s Fine Dining Restaurant, The Buttery Family Restaurant or the Golf Club House overlooking 12 hole Par 3 Executive golf course.

I found the food to be satisfactory but not as stunning as I had expected looking at the well-done web page of the Hotel.

But that is not what you come here for.

well in advance to book a spot in the famous “walking with lions” experience.

A great article has been published in the UK Daily Mail, please click here to read it – saves me the time to say things IMG_4433twice! 🙂

Thanks for bothering to read and follow the links! If the photos in the Daily Mail scared you a bit (they definately scared my mom!) I should mention that The Ranch trains lions for international movie productions. The lions from the movie “the ghost and the darkness” came from there as well. So they aren’t really  that “wild things” – but yes, a predator wil always be a predator.

All in all, a five-star happy holiday experience for those who need quick results, a short getaway, a wow-experience or just want to break away to some instant adventure.

The Ranch guarantees a Malaria free experience, which is nice if you bring the kids. On the back of the safari trucks under the usual funny remarks of the experienced tour guides you can for sure have a good time with friends and family. Give it a try!
