Hiking in the Soutpansberg
South Africa is bordering two oceans and the classic getaway is a trip to the sea or to a nice game lodge. If you are on a budget, or just game to do something else, or want to slowly prepare for that big Drakensberg hike, a quick break in the Soutpansberg area might be just it for you. When I moved to South Africa a couple of years ago, I was not lucky enough to relocate to the ocean although I am a water girl. But, Praise the Lord – there are some spectacular mountains towering over the north side of town. And mountains are my second love. I definitely would wither and die in a desert like the Karoo, and even living in a city like Polokwane with just flat spaces all around would be unbearable. So I am really thankful for this stunning mountain range hosting an impressive biosphere attracting researchers from near and far.
To come for a weekend, you could choose to stay at some of the fine hotels and lodges in the area like the Mountain View Hotel (awesome cousine and the best view! but the hotel part a little oldish) or the Ultimate Guesthouse (lovely accommodation in the mountain, putt putt course, pool, but the food a little greasy). However, if you want to “train” for your Kilimanjaro hike, maybe you consider staying at rustic Camp Africa!
, Entering Louis Trichardt on the N1, take the off-turn at the 3rd crossing (circle), from there turn right at the the 2nd 4-way stop, straight into Forrestry Road, and follow the Camp Africa signs. You will have to pay R10 to a guard at the entrance to the Soutpansberg Forrest, which I gladly do every time we are taking the kids for a hike or a picnic.
You follow the dirt road up the scenic mountain, stop for taking pictures if you like, until you reach the camp situated on the fringes of indigenous forest which its beautiful view over Louis Trichardt.
Camp Africa has five huts and many grassy camping spots. Each hut is a ‘family-unit’ with two single beds and a double bunker. Camp Africa has a fully licensed bar and a fully fitted kitchen. Each of the ablutions has a toilet, washbasin and two showers. There is a large boma where the beautiful evenings may be enjoyed. Bring the whole family for a short break from the mayhem of city life…
Your hosts will advise you on hort (5 hour) or long (2-3 day) hiking routes.
The trails are basically maintained but in this tropical climate expect them to be mossy and overgrown. There are also wild leopards and lots of bucks to be spottet as well as a huge variety of birds and butterflies.
