Day 7, Midlands Meander here we come!

Beautiful Natal! Driving through it’s amazing landscapes dominated by variations of the Drakensberg mountains, the high veld and fynbos, it’s vastness and beauty never seizes to excite me.

We are driving to one of my favorite South African destinations, the Midland’s Meander. I believe every South African should have been there at least once. It is definitely not the “Africa” you expect to see coming from overseas, rather a dreamer’s heaven, a peaceful enclave of creativity and leisure involuntarily paying homage to the aspirations of the first adventurers coming to South Africa seeking their fortune.

You will find a lot of beautiful, wholesome organic farms, equestrian estates and a great variety of crafts people producing anything from turned wood items to leather bags and shoes, unusual toys, pottery and jewelry etc. Many farms have their own shops where you can purchase additive free wholesome foods ranging from goats cheese to old fashioned preserves, handmade chocolates and wines.

Let me take you with me to explore, indulge and dream amongst the gentle hills and warm-hearted people who call the KwaZulu Natal Midlands home. The Midlands Meander route is situated between the city of Pietermaritzburg in the East and the majestic uKhahlamba Drakensberg mountain range (a World Heritage Site) in the West, in the uMgungundlovu district, one of eight regions of the ‘Zulu Kingdom’. In the Midlands, life is lived at a gentler pace, we take time to chat to strangers in the trading store and shell our own peas. On your visit, explore the forests and farmlands and the small villages inhabited by interesting characters. For the children there are many “do-it-yourself” places, petting farms, awesome playgrounds, horse riding and much more.

These sign boards are what you have to look out for, announcing either accomodation, cuisine, an artist or shop in the Midlands Meander.

One day, when I’ll retire, I might want to own a stud farm or a wine estate here …

Without a dream, we won’t go anywhere. To me, this is a perfect place.

At the many restaurants and cafes owned by adventurers from all over the world we will savor new flavors and celebrate memorable moments. May you be enticed to return to this Good Place.

I never get tired driving through Natal.

One day I might just retire to a place like this, have a stud or wine farm and enjoy the good life.
South African small biz at it’s best. South African Entrepreneurs providing valuable jobs and great hand made goods.
The Midlands feel like Little England with their beautiful cottages.
Enjoy your afternoon tea in beautiful surroundings.
Many little gift shops with cute decorations – make your pick on the Meander Map and stop by the ones you find interesting. There are, for my taste, a few too many fluffy little English Ladies shops but hey, they make for some real nice pictures. Enjoy.
