Depending on who you are traveling with there are countless of awesome accommodations in the Midlands Meander. The midlands are always inviting, even in the coldest, rainiest weather the lovely guesthouses and pubs are the perfect backdrop for snuggly getaways, reading a classic by the fireplace, enjoying a spa treatment, relaxing and “meandering”.
One place that is yet on my “to do”list is Fordoun Hotel and Spa. With my lively bunch I will not go and upset the tranquility seeking guests, and sothis lovely Spa has to wait until I am a lady in my middle ages with an elegant hat, few books in print and affluent enough to enjoy the good life …
A place where we stayed with my parents was the Umgeni Valley Nature Reserve in the heart of the KZN Midlands, one km. from Howick on the Karkloof Road. The reserve is comprised of natural bush and grasslands with giraffe, zebra, a variety of antelope and 270 bird species. Accommodation is offered in chalets, cottages, dormitories and rustic bush camps. The zebras come right up to the chalets which makes breakfast on the verandah really something special. There are lovely hiking trails right there in the reseve. Hiking being one of my parents favorite holiday activities, stalking buffalo and giraffe in the bush was a real treat. Howick itself has some really nice restaurants, the Yellowwood restaurant right next to the reserve has an exceptional chef and a lovely atmosphere, promting my parents to use the moment for a quick waltz.
As a married couple without children we loved our stay at Giverny B&B, the lovely remotely situated cottage with a self catering kitchen and romantic fireplace was exactly what you need when all you need is love.
